Security Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any kind of car, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Wider Security Background

This revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

This broader defence environment highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including vehicle usage to communication practices.
