The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.
